Michelin Star Picnic by the Kamo River

Our Unforgettable Lunch Picnic Adventure

One sunny morning, we were strolling over the Shijo Bridge above the Kamo River, discussing what to eat lunch. Seeing a beautiful sky and calm river, we both came up with the same idea, “This is the perfect day for a picnic by the river!” Immediately, we walked over to the Kyoto Takashimaya depa-chika (department store’s basement) to find a bento box and a bottle of sake for our romantic lunch.

The Japanese department store basement is full of food vendors. From fancy French bakeries to your quick sushi fix, the place offers a wide range of items that cater to every palate. Our mission was clear – to find a bento box that would elevate our experience.

At the one corner promoting Kyoto’s local cuisine, we found these amazing lunch boxes curated from local Michelin-starred restaurants such as Uosaburo in Fushimi and Izuju in Gion at surprisingly reasonable prices. However, when we saw a bento box from Kikunoi, which is our favorite Kaiseki restaurant near Yasaka Shrine, we selected it without hesitation.

After purchasing our Kikunoi bento, we walked over to the liquor section in the depa-chika which provides a huge selection of Japanese and international drinks. The store often hosts special Sake Maker events, inviting customers for tastings right at the entrance, and today was no exception. They are featuring one of our local favorites, Kinshi Masamune. After sampling their seasonal sakes, we selected a bottle we believed would complement our bento.

The Kamo River really stands out because it shows off the changing seasons so well, making it a favorite spot for us throughout the year.

In spring, the cherry blossoms along the river are a major draw. Walking along the bank, we’re surrounded by these beautiful pink and white blooms. It’s a popular spot, but there’s enough room for everyone to enjoy the view, take pictures, or just chill under the trees.

Summer at the river means one thing for us: kawadoko. Dining on these wooden platforms right over the water is the best way to beat the Kyoto heat. The cool breeze from the river, combined with good food, makes these dinners something to look forward to each year. This tradition goes way back to the 1600s, and it’s something you shouldn’t miss if you’re around in the summer.

When fall rolls around, the scenery along the river changes completely. The trees turn bright yellow and red, and we love to take our time walking by the river, enjoying the cooler air and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot. It’s quieter and a nice break from the busier summer months.

Winter brings a totally different vibe to the Kamo River. After a cold night, we sometimes find the riverbanks lightly covered in snow. It’s pretty cold, so we don’t stick around long, but the snowy scene is beautiful and peaceful, making it worth a quick visit.

No matter the season, the Kamo River is a part of our lives here. It’s a place to see the seasons change, hang out, and take a moment away from the usual hustle. Whether it’s the lively spring, relaxing summer nights, reflective fall, or quiet winter, the river has something special to offer. It’s a key spot for us to just enjoy nature and unwind.

This experience reminded us that memorable meals aren’t necessarily found in fine dining establishments. We were not seated at the elaborate restaurant counter, but we had a great view of the river and shared extraordinary moments.

We hope this gives you some ideas for your own adventure!
