About Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre

Cultural Exploration at Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre

We visited the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre a few years after it was built. We were impressed with the well-thought-out architectural effects. The lighting significantly transforms the appearance of the building. We haven’t had an opportunity to attend any of the performing arts events yet, but simply visiting the building and walking inside was enjoyable.

Located within a few minutes walk from the Matsumoto City Museum, the Centre stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to cultural enrichment and artistic expression. Since its inauguration in 2004, the center has evolved into a vibrant hub for the performing arts, offering a diverse range of cultural experiences to both locals and visitors alike. The Centre offers not just theatrical plays but also dance performances and concerts.

The Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre boasts three main performance halls, each designed to cater to different artistic needs. The Large Hall, with its convertible seating arrangement, can accommodate between 750 to 1,800 guests, making it a versatile venue for grand performances. The Small Hall, with its intimate setting of 288 seats, offers a more personal experience, while the Experimental Theater, seating 360, encourages innovative and avant-garde productions. These spaces enable the Arts Centre to host a wide array of events, from traditional theater and classical music to contemporary dance and kabuki, as well as conventions and community gatherings.

Beyond its role as a performance venue, the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre serves as a cultural nexus for Matsumoto, fostering a thriving arts scene among the local community. The centre’s commitment to “time, wisdom, and effort” combined with “understanding, expectation, and collaboration” has transformed Matsumoto into a beacon of cultural transmission, enriching the community’s cultural fabric and encouraging dialogue and exchange.

The Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre’s journey began with its opening in 2004, amidst both anticipation and controversy. The challenges faced in its early days, including opposition to its construction, were met with a spirit of optimism and resilience by its founders. This perseverance has paid off, as evidenced by the center’s 10th-anniversary celebrations in 2013, which showcased its successful integration into the cultural life of Matsumoto.

Under the artistic direction of Kazuyoshi Kushida, the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre has curated an impressive array of programs, such as the World Children’s Literature Discovery Project and the innovative Kuchu Cabaret. These initiatives not only highlight the centre’s creative versatility but also its role in fostering a sense of community and cultural participation.

The Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre’s architectural design was conceived by the acclaimed Toyo Ito, a graduate from University of Tokyo. The building’s curvilinear form and the speckled pattern of inlaid glass across its outer walls create a mesmerizing play of light, marrying form and function in a celebration of modern architecture. Inside, the center continues to enchant visitors with its unique features, such as the gently curving escalator and the rooftop garden, offering breathtaking views of the Japanese Alps.

As the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre moves forward, it continues to embrace its founding principles, striving to be a place of open communication and cultural exchange. The envisioned cultural festival, inspired by global counterparts, aims to further establish Matsumoto as a cultural destination, showcasing the rich tapestry of local and international artistic talent.

The Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre not only stands as a monument to artistic excellence but also as a living, breathing space where art and community converge. Its journey from a contentious beginning to a celebrated institution reflects the transformative power of the arts in community building and cultural dialogue, making it a true cultural beacon in Matsumoto.
